2026 - Aug - Oxhill

It’s August again - after the Armchair Festival but before the Overland gathering, so it must be time to chill at the Shire Campsite at Oxhill.

I left early this morning (7:30) in order the miss the crazy traffic around the New Forest area, as the A31 is still closed due to the heathland fire.   Not early enough it seems.   Lines of cars and vans on the road through Godshill to get to the M27 and more queues trying to get onto the A34 at Winchester.   Then it was plain sailing until the crazy road works at the Air Ballon roundabout on the A219.   Visited Mick at his home in Gloucester - he still in good spirits and his son was there, so that helps.

Then it was time to leave and head for Oxhill, so back up the hill to the Air balloon RAB - even bigger queues going up.   I decided against riding the M5 so travelled through the delightful Cotswolds, as did so many others - Broughton on the Water, Morton in the Marsh etc.

Arrived safely at the Camp Site and met up the Harry who runs it.   Pitched the tent etc and read a few chapters of Jacqui’s book before cooking supper (well heating up a potful of whatever).

Having suffered week after week of high temperatures and hiding at home with the fan on and curtains closed - I picked this weekend to spend a couple of night under canvas!   Overcast all day, some rain on the A34 and now a blustery wind and it’s cold !?!?!?

Both David and Jacqui are due here tomorrow and I have booked a table at the local pub.  My stomach was playing up last night so no beer etc for me.   It is an Hiatus Hernia so they say!!!   Ah Well dear reader - Good night.
